In a country where Tea or Chai (in Hindi) is the first love and obsession of every person, coffee is like a stepsister born in a wrong country. Tea lover, you ask? I say, no I am not. I am a teatotaler. Coffee lover? Hell yeah!! With milk, strong, no sugar, twice daily – afternoon and evening.
Read about my very nostalgic coffee date.
Will you believe me if I tell you that I don’t even know how it tastes? Yes. I don’t. I was born in a family of tea lovers and now married into one. And I for one never had tea and absolutely hate making it. Psst! Even now!! But people say I make awesome tea. Don’t know if they are telling the truth or trying to keep me motivated to make more tea. I think about it sometimes.
My husband loves his tea. It’s impossible for him to start his day without tea. And I can’t stop harping and boasting about my system that cleanses itself every morning without the need of pushing the stuff down by a warm drink. I take so much pride in this. Every morning my husband starts his day with the sentiment that can only be explained by a proverb which his grandfather taught him:
Chai Chatrubhuj cup Narayan,
Basi Hari ki maya,
Baasi munh se piye jo,
Gangaji main nahaya|
This literally means that both tea and the teacup are like God in which one can experience his magic and illusions. Drinking it as the first thing in the morning is like taking a holy dip in the Ganges.
I wonder what happened to the nation that drank gallons of milk once suddenly fell in love with something that was brought by angrez almost 200 years ago. So much so that they made it their own and ditched coffee. In my family, Chai is just not a necessity, it’s an emotion. It’s a thought that’s always on the mind. Any time is tea time.
Good news? Celebrate with tea.
Bad news? Let’s talk about it over tea.
Have to go somewhere? Have tea before the journey.
Tired? Have tea.
Stressed? How about some tea?
Oh! I am so bored. Let me make some tea.
I am so sleepy right now, but I won’t mind some tea.
Hungry? Let’s make some tea.
Happy? Several rounds of tea.
Hot? Ice tea will be nice.
Cold? Ginger tea. Every. Single. Cup.
Food wasn’t tasty. How about some masala tea?
As far I am concerned, I think I’ll continue to love my coffee and enjoy the mayhem that surrounds the exercise of making the perfect cup of tea; every morning.
