Tweens are kids between the ages of 8 and 12. Tweens are different from children even if they are not yet teenagers. Because tweens are concerned with their appearance, now is an excellent time to begin discussing skincare with them.
If tweens begin to take care of their skin from an early age then they can be confident that their skin will appear better during their teenage years and in adulthood too.
As your child gets older and mature, you’ll witness many changes in their skin and hair. The appearance of their skin will be one of the most obvious.
How and when the hormones are going to affect their skin can not be known. Childrens’ oil glands shut off at about six months of age. These oil glands remain Inactive throughout their childhood. However, the first changes stimulated by the hormones of puberty are seen in the skin’s oil glands.
Acne and dandruff often come before the rest of the signs of puberty, sometimes as early as eight or nine. Acne and pimples can show up as anything from mild oiliness to a severe breakout.
What to Expect
The changes in your tween or tween child do not appear magically overnight. You’ll see gradual changes in the appearance of their skin, hair and scalp.
You’ll notice that your child is probably scratching her scalp frequently or just at one spot on the scalp continuously. Flakes of dandruff become visible. The scalp will appear oily very after shampoo.
Pimples and acne might begin with tiny bumps on the forehead, gradually appearing on the chin and around the nose. You’ll also notice blackheads and whiteheads in the T-zone.
5 Natural Skincare Home Remedies For Your Tween and Teen
Pin it!
First and foremost, your tween doesn’t require any anti-acne products because their skin is too sensitive right now for harsher face care ingredients. When considering skincare for your almost teenager, keep in mind that their skin is still very vulnerable to chemicals present in soaps and face cleansers.
Make sure your tween isn’t applying any body lotion or soap on their face. More than often they contain chemicals that might irritate and cause inflammation on their delicate face. Tweens also don’t need to use face moisturiser very often.
Here’s a list of home remedies for your tween to keep their skin healthy:
1. Gram Flour as face cleanser – This is an age-old natural and plant-based ingredient that has been used for centuries to cleanse not only facial skin but also the whole body.
- 1 tsp gram flour
- 2 tsp curd/yoghurt
- a pinch of turmeric powder
- Mix all the ingredients and create a paste. Apply on the face and leave for 10 minutes before taking bath or in the evening before bedtime. Don’t let it dry completely. When the pack is semi-dry, wash thoroughly with lukewarm water. Pat dry face and follow up with a light moisturiser.
2. Olive oil as face cleanser – Olive oil is known for its cleansing and exfoliation properties. Take coin size olive oil in the palm, and massage the face for 5 minutes with gentle movements and strokes. Wash face with lukewarm water. If required, follow up with a gentle face cleanser and put moisturiser.
3. Ground coffee as face cleanser – Ground coffee is the latest natural ingredient in the skincare regime. However, you don’t have to splurge on expensive products.
- 1/2 tsp ground coffee
- 1/2 tsp olive oil or coconut oil
- Make a mixture of ground coffee and oil of your choice from above. Ground coffee will exfoliate and oil will deeply cleanse the skin. Massage gently on the face with very light strokes for 5 minutes. Wash with lukewarm water and wipe clean the face gently. If required, follow up with a gentle face cleanser and put moisturiser.
4. Papaya as skin cleanser – Take a ripe papaya and mash it. Massage it onto the skin for five minutes. Wash the skin with water and see how clarified and soft the skin feels in minutes. Papaya nourishes the skin; thanks to the presence of vitamin A and papain enzyme, it helps remove dead skin cells and inactive proteins, thus rejuvenating the skin.
5. Walnut and Almond as skin cleansers – Whether you are using pure walnut or almond oil or paste, both are excellent sources of Vitamin E, providing nourishment along with cleansing the skin.
- Soak 2 walnut kernels or 4 almonds overnight
- Peel the almonds before using them the next morning.
- Grind them with some cold milk and make a paste
- Put the paste on the face for 10 minutes.
- Scrub the face gently before washing off with cold water.
- Pat dry and follow up with a gentle moisturiser if required.
Bottom Line
At this age, skincare is primarily about teaching them personal hygiene and how to keep their skin clean. There’s no need to take any more precautions for at least a few more years unless acne becomes a serious problem.
Show to your paediatrician or skin specialist in case you feel the acne and pimples are painful, showing up more frequently or in high density.
You may set your tween on the path to good skin care habits early by teaching them some simple skincare steps and assigning them the responsibility of taking adequate care of their skin. This way, they will have healthy skin even as teenagers and in adulthood.
We must try not to expose their skin to chemicals from an early age. Natural skincare is not only safe from side effects and after effects, but it’s also cost-effective.
