Listening is both an art and a skill. Listening is as important as talking. Children love to talk. When they are little, parents want them to start talking soon. And once they start talking, there’s no stopping. We love that, don’t we!
When we pay attention to what our children are saying or trying to tell us, they feel heard and they feel important. It makes them talk to you more and share more. Interactive listening is very important in every stage of life and in every profession.
Interactive listening is a two-way communication and encourages a healthy dialogue between you and your children. By showing interest in what they are saying you can establish a bond of trust with your children.
How To Listen To Children So They Talk
Here are a few pointers that will help you become a good listener:
i) Look in the eyes of your children when they are talking to you
If they are talking to you, look at them. Establish and open the path of two-way communication. Your children are worthy of your attention. Give them their fair share. Look excited and completely attentive towards them.
ii) Lean towards your children and listen intently
Body language plays a big role in showing your interest and inclination towards them and their thoughts. Appear as if you don’t want to miss a single word.
iii) Ask questions
By asking questions, let your children know that you are listening. They would love to delve into details that they might otherwise miss while talking about anything. You’ll also understand them better and can strike a meaningful conversation.
iv) Don’t interrupt when they are talking
Don’t change the subject unless your children are finished. Don’t interrupt their chain of thoughts. No matter how anxious you are to point out their unkempt clothes, untidy hair, dirty mouth and hands.
v) Using “You” and “Your” more than I, Me and Mine
Keep the conversation interesting for your children by talking more about them and listening to them. By using words I, me and mine, you are shifting the focus towards you. That’s talking not listening.
Even though these points are for parents, these are useful in every walk of life, every profession, and even if you are not a parent. Being a good listener allows you to learn more.
