Other than reading, there can be many other ways to improve English vocabulary. There are many word games for kids and adults for improving their English vocabulary.
Kids learn longer words from the age of 4. They also become more familiar with language and phonics. Kids at this age are also learning to read, sometimes in more than one language. The sooner they are exposed to newer words, the more they will be able to memorise and retain them.
Many adults struggle to remember what familiar vocabulary words mean and can’t use them when most needed. Some also feel intimidated by the idea of using new and unfamiliar words in their work or personal life without being familiar with their right usage or meaning.

Word Games For Kids and Adults To Improve English Vocabulary
My family loves playing words games. Word games are our favourite family games. There can be a verbal game or a board game like Scrabble, Pictionary, Bananagrams, etc. Atlas and Memory Game are our absolute favourites. Whenever we are travelling, these two games adds so much fun to the journey,
Reading is still the best way to learn and enrich vocabulary. Reading also helps in understanding the context in which a word is being used in any sentence or conversation.
Word games are one of the most fun and easy ways to teach vocabulary. While some kids and adults get frustrated with straightforward reading, word games disguise learning new words and their meanings as a fun challenge. Plus, playing language games together is a great teamwork exercise.
Here’s a life of a few games and activities that can help to nourish the vocabulary-
1. Pass The Ball: This game helps in building new vocabulary and recalling known words. Sit with your kid and start passing the ball to each other. On every turn say a word. You may prompt your kid by giving hints like the name of a country, a game, a thing in your bag, the colour of your shoe, etc.
2. We Rhyme: This game helps in learning rhyming words. Start with simple words like sit-bit, light-fight, cat-mat, etc., and gradually move to more complex words like glow-flow, jump-bump, etc.
3. Guessing Game: Take coloured pens and a few plain papers. Draw things, shapes and animals and ask your kid to guess what they are. This helps in not only building his vocabulary but memory too.

4. Think Link: This is a word association game where you will give two words to your kid, like house and bedroom. Now prompt your kid to tell things that are associated with the bedroom.
5. Atlas: In this word game, the first person says a word and then the next participant says a word with the last alphabet of the word said by the first or the previous member of the group. For ex., if the first member says ‘ENGLISH’ then the next member has to say a word with the alphabet H, so on and so forth.
6. Memory Game: This super fun game not only builds vocabulary but also improves memory. In this game, every member of the team has to remember and keep building the chain of words by repeating every word one by one said by every member of the group in every round and adding a new word to the chain. For ex: In a group of 4 members,
member 1 says – Improve
member 2 says a new word along with the word said by the previous member – Improve Your
member 3 further adds a new word – Improve Your English
member 4 says adds a new word – Improve Your English Vocabulary
member 1 further adds a word – Improve Your English Vocabulary With
member 2 adds a new word – Improve Your English Vocabulary With Games
so on and so forth.
Bottom Line
Vocabulary games and activities test and strengthen communication skills whether it’s English or any other language. These word games minimize frustration by disguising learning new words in the form of an exciting challenge. Not to mention, simple word games are fun for adults and kids alike and make great icebreaker activities during meetings.
